Welcome to Otago and the Otago Museum!
Begin your journey in Southern New Zealand at Dunedin's most visited attraction - Otago Museum. It makes for a great introduction to the southern region, exploring the richness and vibrancy through outstanding collections covering culture, nature and science.
The Otago Museum hosts a superb variety of collection-rich galleries, but the 'must see' has to be the Otago Museum's landmark gallery, Southern Land, Southern People, particularly if you're not from the area. Discover a region of superlatives and extremes... driest, wettest, coldest, highest, windiest, most remote. Southern Land, Southern People explains the origins of our demanding landscape and environment, how people discovered and explored it, how they utilised its natural resources and how its challenging nature rubbed off on the people in the form of 'southern character'.
If you would like a more in-depth, personal experience then take a guided tour. We have a Highlights of the Museum guided tour daily at 11:30 and a Southern Land, Southern People guided tour daily at 15:30, but we can accommodate to your needs and provide you with a guided tour of any of our galleries at any time during opening hours (by prior arrangement).
General admission to the Otago Museum is free - but we greatly appreciate donations.
