SOUTH OTAGO

Welcome to Clutha Country – where everyone says hello! South Otago is fertile farmland, with a population of 16,839 (2006 census). Approximately 25% live in Balclutha.

Sheep and cattle farms dominate a landscape that is also home to New Zealand’s largest river, the Clutha. The river passes beneath Balclutha's iconic bridge at an average of 570 cubic metres per second! The Catlins Coast in the southeast of Otago is home to some of New Zealand's most stunning natural features. Native bush, birds, caves, waterfalls, sea lions and seals together make the Catlins one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets!

‘Clutha Country's greatest attraction is in its people, who are welcoming and friendly. They have a strong community spirit and by working together they are able to achieve outstanding projects and run events for all to enjoy.’

Mayor Juno Hayes
