Step outside the square and into Kumamoto Artpolis: Architecture through Communication at the Otago Museum. Innovation is key in this photographic exhibition from Japan, which considers the role of architecture in developing communities and increasing regional vitality.
The Kumamoto Artpolis programme began in 1988 as a ground-breaking attempt to revitalise communities in the Kumamoto region. The goal was not simply to improve the quality of building design, but to use architectural projects to bring together architects and local residents, and to consider how their community and lifestyle might be improved. The result: a collection of superbly designed buildings that are representative of Japanese contemporary architecture.
Kumamoto Artpolis thrived on a culture of communication and feedback, and the project provided a launching pad for notable architects like Toyo Ito, who was appointed commissioner in 2005. Today the public architecture he and others have created have become landmarks in Kumamoto residents’ cultural and daily lives.
With over 70 examples of Japanese architecture, Kumamoto Artpolis: Architecture through Communication offers food for thought on the place of architecture in society. But you’ll have to be quick! This exhibition is only for a limited time.
