A truly golden treasure, Central Otago is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. First settled in the early 1860s by prospectors in the goldrush, Central Otago is now home to 16,644 people (2006 census). Alexandra, the area’s largest town, has a population of 4,824.
Schist forms the mountains in Central and tors jut from the landscape. Tussock grasses that somehow manage to prosper in the dry, hot summers and bitterly cold winters turn the landscape a glorious gold, a reminder of a bountiful history. Today sees a lifestyle and economy driven by agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and tourism. And summer’s not summer without delicious Central Otago fruit!
‘We’re not only the hottest, driest, coldest and farthest from the sea in all New Zealand, we’re also the most hospitable. From picturesque rail trail pubs to buzzy curbside cafés or fine garden restaurants, and in our many vineyards, Central is a place to kick back, relax, and enjoy the best food, the best wine, the best people and by far the best scenery that this great little country can offer.’
Mayor Malcolm Macpherson
